Jane Bennett – I’ve been offering yoga & mindfulness to children & families since 2015, including children & young people with disabilities, special educational needs, neurodiversity. I’m a qualified Children’s Yoga & Mindfulness Teacher (2015), Adult Yoga Teacher (2017), and Yoga Therapist for Children & Young People (2022). I have a fully enhanced DBS check and I’m part of the online update service. I am trained in first aid and safeguarding with the NSPCC. I can offer either yoga & mindfulness sessions for children, or sessions of family yoga, with parents / carers taking part too. They are different with different benefits to each, as I explain below.
The sessions – The sessions follow a rhythm and are adapted around the needs of the participants. They always include some gentle movement for warming up and connecting with the body. Deep pressure, sound and movements with the breath are used to engage the sensory system and stimulate proprioception and interoception. We always have fun and often include a theme such as kindness or gratitude or activities for feeling strong and brave. Standing up yoga poses, lying down and often a short flowing sequence. And in invitation to rest towards the end of the session and try out a guided relaxation. The sessions benefit the children both physically and emotionally/mentally. It is common for children to release tension and tightness in the body which benefits them physically and emotionally. It can also happen that through the breathing exercises children experience some peace in their minds which them impacts them physically as well.
