What an incredible experience! A group of 150 of us travelled to the Manchester Opera House to see the relaxed performance of Robin Hood — and it was truly spectacular from start to finish.
This year’s production sees Jason Manford and Ben Nickless take over Sherwood Forest in a fun-filled, laugh-out-loud version of the classic tale. Joined by a wonderful cast including Landi Oshinowo as The Spirit of Sherwood, Adam Strong as the Sheriff of Nottingham, and Sarah Vaughan as Maid Marion, the show was packed with music, jokes, sparkle, and panto magic.
Because we attended the relaxed performance, the whole experience was thoughtfully tailored to suit our audience. The cast came out at the beginning to introduce themselves and explain parts of the show, the lights were kept dimmed rather than fully dark, and sensory rooms were available for anyone who needed a break. It was brilliantly designed with SEND families in mind, helping everyone feel comfortable and able to enjoy the performance in their own way.
There were so many standout moments, but a few favourites definitely included:
- the flying fire engine 🚒
- the hilarious “in the gap” song 🎶
- the big finale with audience participation, singing “One smart fella, he felt smart” – which had everyone giggling!
And the excitement didn’t end when the curtain came down — some of our families even went round to the stage door afterwards and were lucky enough to meet Jason Manford and Ben Nickless in person. There were smiles, selfies, and some very happy children (and adults!) after getting to meet the stars of the show.
It was wonderful to watch our families relax, laugh, and get swept up in the story of Robin Hood and his Merry Men as they tried to outwit the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and full of joy — exactly what a relaxed panto should be.
